Learning Goal: I’m working on a global health project and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
Facilitate shared decision making through negotiation and consensus-building methods.
Scenario:
Your organization saw a need for additional support, so they gained approval to hire a new staff member. A job posting went out, several people applied, and 15 people were interviewed. The committee narrowed the field to four candidates but could not decide between the four. They decided to form a second committee to review the résumés and select a candidate from the finalists. You and your group members have been selected to sit on your organization’s hiring committee. Each person on the committee will approach the task from the perspective of one of the character profiles (Kelvin, Shallon, Giva, or Gustavo). Your charge is to negotiate with the other members of the committee to select one new staff member. If more than one candidate is selected by the committee, a consensus must be found.
I have “Kelvin”: Getty Images/Blend Images
Kelvin is a 25-year-old social worker. He has worked with
the organization for 2 years and has proven himself to be
a hard worker with creative and innovative ideas. Kelvin is
very outgoing and relates well with the clients who come
into the facility. He is always polite and friendly and is
described as “always having a smile on his face.”
Kelvin grew up in a very traditional Tanzanian home. His
parents emigrated to the United States before he was
born, but they still practice cultural traditions like keeping
your left hand to yourself, respecting elders, avoiding any
show of anger, and shunning public displays of affection.
There are times when his cultural traditions are overlooked
in the workplace, but those closest to him at work try to be
respectful.
Kelvin was chosen to be in this committee because of his
innovative ideas and willingness to work with anyone.
However, he is the youngest member of the group and
may defer to those with more experience and age when
confronted with adversity.
The most important characteristics for the open position are:
Organization skills
Outgoing personality
Ability to relate to many different types of people
Experience in a public health setting
Note: The fictional résumés are designed so that each candidate has one of the important characteristics so there will not be a clear best candidate.
Write a one-paragraph summary of the candidate your decided to hire and why.
2. Strategic Planning Working Committee
Each student should post a comprehensive response.
Describe the final consensus of the group on the two scenarios that were presented.
Note: This first one- paragraph summary for each scenario should be the same from all group members.
The answers to the following questions will be different for each student.
Explain how you facilitated shared decision making through negotiation and consensus-building methods.
– What specific consensus-building methods did you use?
– What specific consensus-building methods did other group members use?
– What were the most/least effective?
– What negotiation methods did you use?
– What negotiation methods did other group members use?
– What were the most/least effective?
Post a brief explanation of two challenges associated with multicultural leadership.
Provide two strategies for addressing these challenges.
Explain how multicultural competencies might influence your personal public health leadership philosophy.
Respond to at least 2 posts in a substantive way and respond to all instructor queries. In your response, address at least one of the following:
Assess your peer’s explanation of two challenges they chose associated with multicultural leadership.
Evaluate your peer’s two strategies for addressing these challenges.
Compare and contrast how your peer felt that multicultural competencies might influence their personal public health leadership philosophy with your own response.
Comment on the explanation of how your peers facilitated shared decision making through negotiation and consensus-building methods. Note any suggestions you may have for your peer.
Support your statements/arguments with evidence:

Learning Goal: I’m working on a global health report and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
A study of positive deviance in community health won Walden student Piroska Bisits-Bullen the award for best dissertation of the year in 2011. In her study, she reviewed reports of how villagers (often women) solve local health problems in creative ways, for example, addressing protein deficiency in the community, with a simple solution—cultivating shrimp in the rice fields. Her review, condensed into a journal article, was published that same year (see Required Resources).
Most reports of positive deviance focus on specific health issues rather than underlying social and environmental determinants, and Zeitlin et al. (1990) have cautioned that the concept of positive deviance “should not divert attention and energy away from efforts to change the economic, social, and political conditions of the poor.” In this last Discussion of the course, you will consider how a positive innovation was introduced by members of a community to advance their own health and explain the actual or potential role of social media in advocating for this innovation.
To PrepareReview the module Learning Resources.
Reflect on the success story case studies from previous modules.
Consider the role of mass media in the success stories.
By Day 4 of Week 11Post a response in which you:
Explain the concept of positive deviance as a strategy for innovation in public health.
Explain how a positive innovation has been introduced by a community to advance their own health. Your community should be focused on some aspect of a disease or population.
Explain the actual or potential role of social media in advancing this innovation.
Respond to at least 2 posts in a substantive way and respond to all instructor queries. In your response, address at least one of the following:
Offer an alternative explanation of positive deviance as a public health phenomenon.
Offer an opposing or different viewpoint.
Validate your peer’s viewpoint with evidence from personal experience.
Offer a resource that your peer might find useful.
